hello

" The war of 1914-18 was an artillery war!. Artillery was the battle winner, artillery was what caused the greatest loss of life, the most dreadful wounds and the deepest fear"

note that prior to 1914 , forts were built to defend frontiers, but the germans made massive mortars that destroyed these fortresses in a single day !.!.!. and this changed the whole philosophy of warfare/defence

Artillery was used in a variety of ways -
- bombarding supply depots, supply routes
- harassment , bombarding lowered morale and stopped enemy soldiers from sleeping
- cutting barbed wire

The Standard Barrage :
Throughout 1915, infantry attacks were preceded by as massive an artillery bombardment as possible, intended to pulverise both the enemy and their defences

The Creeping Barrage:
In late 1915/early 1916, Commonwealth forces began developing a new form of barrage!. Beginning close to their own lines, the 'creeping' barrage moved slowly forward, throwing up dirt clouds to obscure the infantry who advanced close behind!. The barrage would reach the enemy lines and suppress as normal (by driving men into bunkers or more distant areas) but the attacking infantry would be close enough to storm these lines (once the barrage had crept further forward) before the enemy reacted

- deliver gas to the enemy trenches and rear areas (mustard and chlorine gas)

- better radios / airoplane observation allowed precision barrages !.!. more accurate and less wasteful on ammunition

- a bombardment consisting of a variety of calibres was useful in destroying enemy defences
- smaller field guns would sweep the enemy terrain , thus blocking reinforcements
- heavy guns would blast the trenches and bunkers , destroying enemy soldiers below ground level

note that during the Great War, losses due to artillery fire rose to 67% of total casualties!. The figure had previously stood at around 15% in previous wars

the british used a staggering 176 000 000 artillery shells during ww1 !Www@QuestionHome@Com

A very big role on the Western Front where two almost static armies faced each other for years!.
Artillery was often the only means of hitting the enemy and was used in massive barrages as the prelude to infantry attacks!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
