Well, as with any society it needs the basics!. Foundations to build a successful empire would include a strong economy, a powerful political system and of course protection via military!. The soldiers of Sparta would need to not only defend the country when threatened with the possibility of being destroyed, but also to attack and expand their territory if needs be!. All nations today have an army, for what purpose!? To intimidate, to deter, to aid other nations and keep the people secure!. Generally these ideologies can be applied to ancient Sparta!. Spartan warriors were the underlying force, a stabiliser - one of the 3 most significant aspects of a civilization!. Without them, who is there to prevent rebellion!? Who can protect the citizens from being enslaved or massacred by the enemy!? No one!.
