Google "Hiroshima" and "Nagasaki" and "atomic bomb" and you will be overwhelmed with sites!. But, in a nutshell, what happened is that the US dropped the first-ever atomic bombs on those two cities, killing about a third of a million civilians!. The effect was to shock Japan into surrender and (a) bring the Pacific part of WW2 to an end and (b) end the Imperial, militarist regime in Japan!. Within a few years, Japan became a democracy and pursued the capitalist export-led path to economic development and prosperity!.

So one of the impacts is that when the cold war happened, Japan, though not a culturally western country, was on the western side!.

Another is that Bundesrepublik Germany was on the western side too!. Historically, France and Germany (or Prussia before the unification of Germany) had usually been on opposite sides in European wars, with Russia on the same side as one of them!. An effect of the comprehensive defeat of Germany in WW2 and the shock of the German people when they discovered what the Nazis had really done, was that the (non-Russian-controlled) Germans allied and aligned with their conquerors (Britain, France, America) against Russia (the USSR as it then was)!.

Meanwhile, the Russians, remember, had lost WW1 and a lot of territory from what had been western Tsarist Russia!. In WW2 they were on the winning side, and the subconscious imperialist dreams of old Russia combined in the leadership's minds with the overt ideological desire to spread Communism to result in the imposition of communism on Poland and other countries conquered by the Red Army during the last year of WW2!.

Another point!. Britain, France and Germany were rather exhausted emotionally and economically at the end of the war!. The USSR and the USA were not!. So the world was changed from a multi-power world beofre and during the war to a 2-power world!. Hence the even-handed stand-off between the two powers we call the Cold War!.
