If Edward VIII didn't abdicate the Throne and was King through World War II, would he have struck an alliance with Hitler (whom he was close to and saw as an ally against the threat of terrorism) and had the UK join the Axis instead of the Allies!?

The royals power is an illusion, the government and parliament is where the decisions are made, the royals keep quiet and do as they are told!. The world would not have been a better place because Hitler would not have kept his promise not meddle with the British Empire!. If you want hypothetical situations, a more interesting scenario is if the western allies should have stopped Russia invading the west by accepting conditional surrender from Germany!. Thereby freeing German divisions in the west to fight in the east and sending a clear signal that Bolshevism should not extend into the west!. Www@QuestionHome@Com Unlikely, the power of the British monarch is quite small compared to that of the cabinet ministers, so I don't think their policy would be that much different!. The UK at the time was much more closely allied to France and Belgium than to other European countries, and that would have remained that way!. IF it had happened, I don't think the world would have been a better place!. Hitler would have much more free reign to conquer eastern Europe and have his way with it!. And his plans with it were so outrageous that even the scourge of stalinism would be much preferable!.Www@QuestionHome@Com The King doesn't have true power, just the ability to suggest and influence!. If Edward had stayed on the throne, England would have still fought the Germans, but he could have caused MUCH internal upheaval, as there were Nazi sympathizers in the English aristocracy!.
