They came close to entering in 1915, when the Lusitania was sunk by a U-boat, but matters were patched over, and it was not until 1917, when Britain intercepted German minister Zimmerman's telegram to his ambassador offering the Mexican government Texas, New Mexico and Arizona if they sided with Germany in the event of the US going to war, and leaked the contents to the American press, that the sense of national outrage exceeded the sense of national profit-making that had prevailed hitherto!.
Wilson asked Congress to declare war on 2nd April and they did so on the 6th!.

They entered on the 6th April, 1917!. They had formerly been neutral, however Germany's unrestricted submarine campaign, with which they tried to starve Britain into defeat, meant that Americans were killed on sunken ships!. As well as this, the British revealed to the Americans a telegram that had been intercepted from Germany, asking Mexico to join the war in case the US decided to join the war!.
