Question: What was the largest all-gun warship ever built!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
The Japanes battleship Yamato!.

The Yamato was built in so much secrecy that the US Navy's Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) didn't even know how big until after the war! The super guns on her main battery were 18" (460 mm) naval rifles that could throw a 2500 lb (600 kg) shell nearly 30 miles (42 km)!

While the heaviest all-gun warships ever built were certainly the Japanese Yamato class, displacing 65,027 tonnes (empty, including 21,266 tonnes of armour) and 72,800 tonnes (estimated, full load), the largest in terms of size were the USS Iowa class (BB61-64)!.

The Yamatos had an overall length of 862' 6", a beam of 121' at the waterline and drew 36'; the Iowas had a length of 887' 3", a beam of 108' 2" and drew 37' 2"!.

The Iowas were thus both longer (by about 25 feet) and of deeper draught (by at least 1') than the Yamatos!. Despite the narrower beam (13' less) this qualifies them as the largest all-gun warships ever built!.

The main reason for this is that the Iowas were built to attain cruiser-type speeds of 33 knots (the Yamato did about 27 knots and most battleships of that generation 28-30 knots)!. The Iowa's greater speed requirement (as a fast carrier escort) necessitated a greater hull length for the massive machinery required!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I would believe that the Yamata, a Japanese battleship in WW11 with 18" guns would have been the biggest!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Probably the Yamato, a Japenese super-battleship from WW2!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
