Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by people of English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies!. Why did this difference in development occur!? Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
When colonisation of the America's started under Elizabeth 1, colonies were started under Royal charters which were established for religious, economic commerical reasons!.

Many colonies started out as cash crops for Britain - growing tobacco and cotton which would be exported back to Britain!. So many of the people who worked here had a very strong protestant work ethic and encouraged the use of slavery to make production more effective!.

But colonies were also established by those people who were fleeing religious persecution in Britain and throughout Europe!. Puritains, protestants, Quakers all came to the 'new world' of the America's looking to escape the persecution back home!. Not really concerned with economic success like the south, they were happy to enjoy the freedoms of the new world!.

To understand how these colonies developed helps to understand why the U!.S developed as it did and the reasons why the U!.S civil war broke out!.

because they had nothing in common!.

New England was brought up as religious and commercial settlements, with farming and slavery not exactly it's strong point in the 18th century!. Most of the Chesapeake region was farming for crops, and since they didn't exactly unify till 1756, differences had developed!.

they had nothing in common except that they were from the same mother country!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Distance between the two areas in the 1600's was large enough to require many days/weeks to travel from one city to the other!. also the presence of Native Americans and their interactions with the English also caused differences!. The natives being friendly/hostile would have led to the differences in lifestyles and reactions towards other Native American tribes they would encounter later on!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
