As a rule, all wars can be avoided since they represent the failure of politicians to arrive at compromise!. All that is required is that one side gives in and accepts that it can't change things!. So in the American Civil War (I assume this is about USA), the South could have given up some of their States Rights and acceded to the Federal Government in matters of trade, pricing, agricultural protection and so on!. Alternatively, the Federal Government could have accepted that slave-based agriculture could continue and that Southern States could determine their own laws for social discimination, permitted marriages, education, and expansion into former Spanish territories!. Now then; does either of these sound possible!? If so, then the War was avoidable!. In one paragraph!.

EDIT 2nd paragraph!. Drakestone is right and "the preservation of the Union" appeared to most international observers at the time as a cynical political stance used by pressure groups to further their own ends!. Abolitionists supported the war to gain emancipation for slaves!. Northern industrialists supported it because it was good for business and would give them the commercial edge for generations to come; maybe to the present time!. The Northern military actually desired some form of conflict because they'd seen no action for decades whereas Southern military families had had experience in Mexico and the new south western terrritories!. In these senses, the War was probably innevitable but could have been avoided if Lincoln had found a way to allow the partition of the Union!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes it could have if the yankees could have kept there nose in there own dang business and left the south alone !. Instead of try to run there economics and ports!.!. See where most ppl are wrong they think the war was completely over slavery but it wasnt!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I agree with everything Victor said above, but he left out, allowing the Southern States to leave the UnionWww@QuestionHome@Com

If Charles I had not insisted on the Divine Right of Kings, yes!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

No, it wouldn't be smart to have the south being the enemy border the US!. Eventually a war would happen!. I don't think just asking the south would have brought the US together!. The south had important resources, and so did the north!. We needed each other!. No look at today, we would be what we are today without that war!. There would be slavery in the South, and all US would be hell!. The main goal of the war was to get the US back together, and that's what we did!. Anyone saying the war wasn't good, you have no friggin clue, the south would be the poorest place ever if we never had that war!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

not without dissolving the union!. The South was committed to preserving slavery and the North was committed to abolishing it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
