The normal career for all women in the 1640s was that of mother and home-maker!. There were no women in the professions, nor government, nor trade, nor property!. It would be usual for a girl of about 17 to be available for matrimony, with a view to actually getting married at age 20 or 21!.

Puritan daughters were no different to others, except that their families would probably hold firmer views on the eligibility of young men!. It would be very unlikely that a girl would select her own husband, or even "boyfriend" and that term was unknown at the time!. To be friendly with a boy at the age of 17 was regarded as equivalent to betrothal!.

The 1640s were an interesting time for Puritans!. Fifteen years earlier, boatloads of them had left England for America, who we now call the Pilgrim Fathers!. The Puritans that remained were at odds with the political and religious establishment of the day, faced limitations on their church observances, and sometimes were physically abused by the authorities because they refused to attend holy communion in the parish church!. In 1642, the English Civil War broke out between the largely Puritan Parliament and the King, and Puritans were therefore branded as rebels and traitors!. That would have had some effect on the marriage stakes affecting young women of the time!. By the end of the War in 1649, about 6 per cent of the English population had died and almost all were men of marriageable age!.
