They would have worked from dawn to dusk for very poor wages maybe only enough to feed themselves if they had families there would never have been enough money to go around !. the poor man worked as a porter in a market ,chimney sweep with children about six to climb inside the chimney , road sweeps, making blacking from lead ( Blacking polish for stoves and metalwork to make it shine black), labourers, In London sewer workers, servants ,navies(digging tunnels and culverts for the railways) any menial job that they could find !. They mostly drank gin a very cheap drink in them days almost pure alcohol!. The food they ate was mostly vegetables , turnip parsnip carrots cabbage some poor fish when they could afford it, meat was to expensive for them, but if they did have enough to afford it beef was the preferred choice, they drank water Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sadly, many poor people ended up in the workhouse!.

I am tracing my family tree at the moment and up till now, fortunately, none of them ended up there!

Some of my ancestors of that time were blacksmiths or corn winders or iron workers
I would image that the day started very early and the food would be very basic-bread, cheese, milk, and perhaps chicken!.

That is all I know at the moment!Www@QuestionHome@Com

sleep in a flop house, that is pay a couple of pennies or a farthing or two to sleep!. Would have had very poor nutrition and many drank a lot!.

Some poor women would try to sell themselves!. Children would be expert pick pockets and petty theives!. Charles Dickens had a lot of real life material to work with for his books!.
