what i'm writing about is how i think that the collision of the native americans and european immigrants extinguished the culture, literature, and traditons of n!. americans, as evidence in their literature from the 1500s, the modern literature, and modern depictions in film and media

Mmmm, definitely not Dances with Wolves , I suggest seeking the American Indian point of view!.
Very important to realize that the cultures (plural) have not been extinguished!. Whittled at, even abandoned by some , but not at all extinguished!. Remember we are not talking about dinosaurs!.
American Indians should be spoken of in the past and present !. One great resource on this subject is Vine Deloria Jr!.

also Native American/American Indian is far to broad, try North East American Indians or Southwest American Indians etc!. you get the idea!.

First watch Dances with Wolves!. This gives you an understanding in how the Native population of the American territories disappeared!. They were hunted down, today it would be called genocide!.
Research the circus and sideshows of the 19th and early 20th Century!. Many featured BRAVES, native Americans dressed up in feathers and costumes!. Anything involving Pocahontas, be it Disney or the movie with Colin Farrell!. Look at any John Wayne cowboy movie, comics from the 40's!. folk tales about Buffalo Bill and the rest!.
