It was a pivotal battle that allowed Lincoln to release the Emancipation Proclamation!.

Chancellorsville was the battle just before Gettysburg, and probably the greatest Confederate victory!. The Yankee's came south over the river and stopped in a heavily wooded area!. They vastly outnumbered Lee, who divided his army in the face of superior odds (a military nono) and sent Stonewall Jackson on a march around the flank of the Yankees and hit them from a direction they werent expecting trouble!. As the Confederates got lined up and started from the woods to make this flank attack, their line was a mile wide and drove all the forest creatures before them out of the woods!. This was the first thing the Yankees noticed - all the rabbits and squirrels and even a few deer running out of the woods!.!.!.!. It was almost dark by the time they got this attack going but it was very successful!. Shortly after dark, Stonewall Jackson rode to the front hoping more could be done!. He rode out in front of his men to see what was in front, and then started back, and was shot by his own men, and died a week later!. Many historians believe one reason the Confederates did not win at Gettysburg is that Jackson was no more!.

Chancellorsville was really just one big house, belonging to John Chancellor!. The Yankee general was Hooker, who gave his name to a certain type of professional ladies!. He liked to have a good time, but had actually done very well up until he stopped in the tangled wilderness, which made his numerical advantage and his far more numerous cannon of little value!.

Almost exactly a year later there was another battle fought over this same exact ground, but the 1864 battle is called "The Wilderness"!. They hadnt buried everybody from the previous year and there were skulls all over the ground!. In both battles the woods caught fire and the wounded who couldnt drag themselves away were burned to a horrible screaming death!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You may want to look into a couple campaigns (series of battles) too!. It might make for an intersesting research paper because you could talk a little bit about individual battles and then how they were all tied together in the campaign and the impact the campaign had on the overall war!.

Examples:
The Penninsula Campaign
Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign
Sherman's March to the SeaWww@QuestionHome@Com

there are a lot out there, Gettysburg was just a last nail in the coffin!. Try vicksburg, or Shermans march to the sea!. Dont forget about naval battles, Ironclads were first used (moniter vs!. Merrimac) during the civil war revolutionizing modern navies!. (when we fought spain in the spanish american war they still had wood ships) !. There are so many battles to go off of!. And i cant believe svit head over here just gaveyou a link!. Good luck with the paper!Www@QuestionHome@Com
