From 1231 to 1273 the Mongols launched a series of invasions into Korea that essentially resulted in Korea being made a vassal of the Mongol Empire for about eighty years!. Basically Korea was a self ruling country within the Mongolian Empire which swore fealty to the Mongol ruler and whose kings were Mongolian nobles (the son of the last Korean Emperor before Mongolian rule married Mongolian royalty)!.

In 1627 and then in 1636 China invaded Korea which lead to Korea becoming a Chinese protectorate!.

Both North and South Korea, at the time still one nation, were oppressed by Japan during WWII!. Actually this can be traced back to the 1870s when Japan started forcing Korea out of China's influence and into it's own (Japan had tried invading Korea in the late 16th century but was defeated with aid from China)!. This lead to the First Sino-Japanese War, fought from 1894 to 1895, to determine who had control over Korea, China or Japan!. Japan won and Korea ceased being a Chinese protectorate!. Korea briefly gained full control over itself again, during which time Empress Myeongseong sought Russian assistance!. The Empress was assassinated by Japanese agents and while Russian forces were forced to withdraw from Korea, Russia had some influence over Korean affairs until it's defeat in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) With Russia's defeat in the Russo-Japanese war in 1905, Japan forced Korea to sign the Eulsa Treaty (aka the Japan-Korea Protectorate Treaty) which made Korea a Japanese protectorate!. Just five years later Japan annexed Korea, and Korea would remain Japanese territory until 1945!.

Japanese surrender lead to Korea being divided in half in 1945, the north adminstered by the Soviet Union and the south by the US!. This was supposed to be a temporary five year deal until a new government could be established!. That government was supposed to be determined by a joint US-USSR commission, but by '47 there appeared no possibility of breaking a deadlock over what that goverment should be and the US petitioned the UN to determine what the government should be!. Thanks to the Cold War this resulted in two seperate governments for the North and South and in 1950 the southern government, the Republic of Korea, was recgonized by the UN as the only legal goverment on the Korean Penisula!. That same month the Korean War began!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I don't think South Korea was oppressed by another nation but oppression did exist between the North and the South therefore causing the separation of the two!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
