California wanted to be added to the union as a free state, but this would have upset the balance between slave and free states in the union!. As a compromise, CA was added as a free state and the fugitive slave act was passed!. The fugitive slave act was a huge deal because it allowed slave catchers to enter free states, track down slaves, and bring them back to the slave states!. It also required average citizens to assist slave catchers in finding slaves, and allowed slave catchers to reclaim slaves without a jury trial, meaning even slaves that had been born and raised in the north could be claimed as property and "returned" south!.

The compromise was meant to keep the nation united, but it only worked for a short while and ended up causing more problems than it solved!.

also the compromise required Texas to give up its claim on New Mexico territory and delayed the debate on slavery in New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona until the time when they would apply for statehood!.

The Compromise of 1850 was a grouping of bills passed by the US Congress after the Mexican-American War!. It was meant to resolve the controversy stemming from the vast stretches of territory gained during the war with Mexico!. Questions arose over whether the land should be slave, free, or a mixture of both!. The Compromise of 1850 put those questions to rest!. California became the 31st state, receiving a status of free!. Texas was given money to give up claim to the Territory of New Mexico!. The Territory of New Mexico was then organized as an official U!.S!. Territory with no law governing its status as free or slave (the people of those territories would decide)!. The slave trade was banned in the District of Columbia, and a more stringent version of the Fugitive Slave Act was passed!.

These bills were passed in hopes that the issue of slavery in the new states would be resolved!. Although the issue in the new states (and territories) was temporarily put to rest, the Compromise itself created a whole host of new problems surrounding the Fugitive Slave Act, and the notion of Popular Sovereignty that it seemed to endorse!.
