Question: If toxic gas was in the mine, what did the miners do with it!?
Back in the days of the gold rush in california, what did the miners do when they discovered that toxic gas was in air in the mines!? Yes I'm certain that when the canary died they got out of there as quickly as possible, but did they just seal up the mine so it can't be used anymore!? Did they burn the gas up!? If the mine is sealed for a long time will the gas completely fill the mine!? Is the gas usually flammable!? Does anyone know a place I can find imformation on this sort of thing!? I'm just wanting to better my knowledge and I find this sort of thing interesting!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The critical factor of mining is circulation of air and control of dangerous explosive gases!. At first fires were burned to create air currents and circulate air, but replaced by fans driven by steam engines!. Protection for miners came with the invention of the Davy lamp and Geordie lamp, where any firedamp (or methane) burnt harmlessly within the lamp!. The modern day equivalent of the Davy lamp is the Protector GR6S Garforth!. A modified version of this lamp is used to transport the Olympic Flame for the torch relays!.
Mining accidents can have a variety of causes, including leaks of poisonous gases such as methane or explosive natural gases called firedamp, asphyxiant gases, dust explosions, collapsing of mine stopes, flooding, or general mechanical errors!.
Abandoned mine are often dangerous and can contain deadly gases!. Old mine workings, caves, etc!. are commonly hazardous simply due to the lack of oxygen in the air (a condition in mines known as blackdamp)!. Blackdamp is a deadly killer which provides no warning to any individual or group of individuals entering such an environment!.

well they would get out and seal the mine or would drill and ventilate the mine if sealed the gas can build up but more than likely would just escape and be absorbed into the ground!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
