Question: Was Greece democratic!? If it was, then how did it develop into a democratic country!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
The Athenian system of government was very democratic in that all the male citizens of Athens could be actively involved in the government of the country, rather than just electing representatives to serve in parliament, as is the case in most modern democracies!.

However, it was a limited democracy, half the population of Athens were slaves, and they had no vote, nor did women, or non-Athenians living in Athens!. But as far as it went, it was the most democratic form of government ever invented, of modern countries only Switzerland has anything approaching the same level of people power!.

This form of democracy seems to have been invented in Athens in the late 500s and early 400s BC!. It was succesful because it appealed to the poorer people of Athens, since even poor men had a vote if they were free Athenians!.

Other Greek city-states had their own way of doing things!. The Spartans for instance had a sort of mixture of democracy and oligarchy!. It had two kings, but there were five ephors who were elected by the citizen assembly, who oversaw and had veto powers over the kings!.

Although the Greeks had slaves, they did not spend all of their time focusing on higher learning(as the above comment suggests)!. What they actually were focused on was going to war with each other!. The city-states were at war with each other almost all the time!. And they were also sports-mad, when they weren't fighting each other they were engaging in sporting contests!. And there were some men who, although free, were poor and had to make a living!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Greece was not a nation!. It was a collection of city-states!. Some were democratic and some were not!. For example, Sparta was a kingdom!. It actually had two kings simultaneously!. Athens was a democracy!. It believed that everyone should have a chance to take political office!. All Athenian men were given a token (lottery ticket) which was then put into a lotto machine to pick who would be in office!. This way, the gods were able to manipulate the outcome of the election!. Because the Greek states conquered the people around them, the captors did all the farmwork so that the Greeks could focus on higher learning!.

Oh, and the Greeks did not call themselves the Greeks!. They either called themselves Athenians, Spartans, Carthagians, etc!. The Latin speaking people encountered a colonizing group of people from the Greek city-state of Graioi!. The Latins calledthem Gryke which became Greek!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
