Mary immediately went to work bringing the Roman Catholic faith back to England!. She initially did this by rescinding the religious proclamations of Edward VI, and replacing them with old English laws enforcing heresy against the Church!. In carrying out the last action, Mary earned her nickname, "Bloody Mary," because during her reign, she had more than 300 persons burned at the stake for heresy!.

In her drive to find an heir to the English throne, at the age of 37 Mary wed prince Philip II of Spain!. This made her subjects even more apprehensive about her, because many viewed Spain as an archenemy of England!.

Mary's foreign affairs had also met failure as well!. Encouraged to ally with Spain by Philip in a war against France, Mary lost Calais, the only English held possession in France!. Sadly, in 1558, deserted by her husband who went back to Spain to claim the Spanish throne, Mary realized that she would not be able to provide an heir, and was forced to recognize her sister, Elizabeth, an Anglican Protestant, as the next ruler of England!.

As Queen, Mary was very concerned about religious issues!. She had always rejected the break with Rome instituted by her father and the establishment of Protestantism by Edward VI!.

Edward's religious laws were abolished by Mary's first Parliament in the Statute of Repeal Act (1553)!. Church doctrine was restored to the form it had taken in the 1547 Six Articles!.

Mary also persuaded Parliament to repeal the Protestant religious laws passed by Henry VIII!. Getting their agreement took several years, and she had to make a major concession: tens of thousands of acres of monastery lands confiscated under Henry were not to be returned because the new landowners created by this distribution were very influential!. This was approved by the Papacy in 1554!. The Revival of the Heresy Acts were also passed in 1554!. Mary also started currency reform to counteract the dramatic devaluation overseen by Thomas Gresham that had characterized the last few years of Henry's reign and the reign of Edward VI!. These measures, however, were largely unsuccessful!.

Hi,

Mary I (1516-1558) is remembered as 'Bloody Mary' for her tireless persecution of Protestants!.
During her reign (1553-1558) over 280 Protestants were burnt at the stake!. She did this as part of her fanatical obsession with restoring the Catholic faith in England (England had been slowly becoming Protestant after her father Henry VIII broke with Rome & founded his own church so that he could divorce Mary's mother, Catherine of Aragon)!.

She succeeded to the throne following the death of her half-brother Edward VI having overthrown the attempt by the Duke of Northumberland to place Lady Jane Grey on the throne!. (Although originally lenient to Jane, following a rebellion by Jane's father, Mary had Jane & her husband executed in 1554 - Jane was 16 years old)!.

She married King Phillip of Spain - an unpopular choice as Phillip & Spain were Catholic - & although she loved Phillip he did not love her & returned to Spain shortly after their wedding!. They never had any children!.
The marriage also forced Mary to involve England in Spain's war with France which was a disastrous move as it resulted in England losing Calais, its last stronghold in France!.

Mary died alone and hated by her subjects to be succeeded by her Protestant half-sister Elizabeth I!.

Hope this helps!.

Bloody Mary was a strict Roman Catholic!. She locked up her sister in the Tower of London and married King Philip of Spain!. This marriage was not a happy one!.
Mary made Catholicism the offical English relgion and started trying to root out the Protestant effort!. Probably, the last important Catholic ruler of England, Mary burnt over 300 Protestants at the stake!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
