What symbols did the natives look for when they needed directions?

Question: What symbols did the natives look for when they needed directions!?

I am doing a group project at school and I cant find out how the natives found their way around without maps or anything!. I was told that they use moss on trees but how could they tell by moss if that's what they used to tell where they were going!. also I need a true answer, one I can use on a project!
