Position:Home>History> Who was the 16th president of US?Question: Who was the 16th president of US!? Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Hi, Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president!. He was born on February 12, 1809, in a one-room log cabin on the 348-acre (1!.4 km2) Sinking Spring Farm, in southeast Hardin County, Kentucky (now part of LaRue County), making him the first president born outside the original Thirteen Colonies!. His parents were Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks, two uneducated farmers!. He married Mary Todd on November 4, 1842!. She was the daughter of a prominent slave-owning family from Kentucky!. The couple had four sons, only one of who survived infancy - Robert Todd Lincoln, born August 1, 1843 in Springfield, Illinois!. He was elected President on November 6, 1860!. He beat Democrat Stephen A!. Douglas, John C!. Breckinridge of the Southern Democrats, and John Bell of the new Constitutional Union Party!. He was the first Republican president, winning entirely on the strength of his support in the North: he was not even on the ballot in nine states in the South, and won only 2 of 996 counties in the other Southern states!. He was assassinated on April 14, 1865 by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre while watching the play Our American Cousin!. Booth jumped into the box and aimed a single-shot, round-slug 0!.44 caliber Henry Deringer at his head, firing at point-blank range!. Major Henry Rathbone momentarily grappled with Booth but was cut by Booth's knife!. Booth then leapt to the stage and shouted "Sic semper tyrannis!" (Latin: "Thus always to tyrants") and escaped, despite a broken leg suffered in the leap!. A twelve-day manhunt ensued, in which Booth was chased by Federal agents (under the direction of Secretary of War Edwin M!. Stanton)!. He was eventually cornered in a Virginia barn house and shot, dying of his wounds soon after!. Interesting note 1: Lincoln was supposed to have had a bodyguard to protect him at all times!. But on the night of the play the bodyguard got bored and wandered away allowing Booth to simply walk into the state box and place a gun to the President's head!. Interesting note 2: The bed in a nearby hotel (Petersen Boarding House) that Booth slept in the night before he killed Lincoln was the same bed that Lincoln was placed on to die on following the shooting!. Lincoln is most famous for: Being president during the American Civil War The Emancipation Proclamation - which brought about the end to slavery Making the 'Gettysburg Address' speech Hope this helps!. merc_cookWww@QuestionHome@Com Total 43 President 16 was Abraham Lincoln March 4, 1861 April 15, 1865!. 1 George Washington April 30, 1789 March 4, 1797 No party 2 John Adams March 4, 1797 March 4, 1801 Federalist 3 Thomas Jefferson March 4, 1801 March 4, 1809 Democratic-Republican Aaron Burr 4 James Madison March 4, 1809 March 4, 1817 Democratic-Republican 5 James Monroe March 4, 1817 March 4, 1825 Democratic-Republican Daniel D!.
