She was popular with the French people at first, but her popularity declined as the french people came unfairly to blame her for France's dire economic situation!. In fact it was the espensive wars France had engaged in, especially the American Revoultionary War, that had led to France's financial crisis!.

Although she was frviolous and extravagent, she was not indifferent to the plight of the poor, and she and Louis XVI both gave generously to the poor people of Paris!.

She created her charming fantasy village at Versailles, where she would go and play at being a simple milkmaid, you can still see it there!.

She bore four children, and had the grief of losing two of them before the French Revolution, she was a devoted mother!.

Her greatest achievement was undoubtedly the courage with which she coped with her situation after the Revolution!. She bravely faced the women who stormed Versailles, even though it must have been a terrifying experience fo rher!. And when she and her family were forced to go and live in Paris as virtual prisoners, she never lost courage!. Even after the Republic was proclaimed, in 1792, and her husband was deposed, she kept up her spirits!. And after her husband was executed and she was imprisoned int he dreadful Concierge she still kept her cool!.

At her trial, she had to stay in the dock for fifteen hours at a time, but she did not lose her nerve, and although she must have known that the 'guilty' verdict was inevitable, she stayed calm, and thanked her defense counsel for speaking so eloquently on her behalf!. When she went to the guillotine, she even apologised to the executioner for accidentaly treading on his foot as she mounted the steps!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Marie Antoinette is perhaps best remembered for her legendary (and, some modern historians say, exaggerated) excesses and for her death: she was executed by guillotine at the height of the French Revolution in 1793 for the crime of treason!.
