Question: The Treaty of Verdun of 843 was one of the root causes of World War One!.!.agree or disagree!?

Interesting hypothesis!. I usually peg the cause of WW1 to the Congress of Vienna!. But I can envision a kind of link back to the Treaty of Verdun!.

But if the Frankish Empire had not been split up at the end of Louis I's reign, a lot of subsequent things would have turned out differently!. For example, could the Reformation have swept through central Europe if it was under Frankish rule!? Could Henry V have bested a France of such power on the field of battle!? Wouldn't France become the leading colonial power of the 16th and 17th centuries!? Would Charles V ever become the HRE!? Would there have been a French Revolution!? Napoleon!?

I suppose it is possible that if the Frankish Empire had not been dissolved in the 9th century, the First World War may never have happened!. We Americans would probably all be speaking French and Spanish today!.

Interesting question!. Thank you!.
