First, there was no draft during the AWI!. That came about in the Civil War!. At the time, every able bodied man between the ages of 16 and 60 were mandated by law to report for militia duty once a month or as needed!. IF the soldier/militiaman was so inclined he could join the regular army!. Now, you could pay someone to stand your place in the militia!. I'm not sure for how much but, and this is REALLY true, this is where the term "******" came from!. A ****** was originally a bunch of sticks that was bound together!. At the time, when they would call the men together they would say, "****** the culls!." This meant "bind the men!." The men who were hired to take your place became known as "faggots!." This obviously does not have the connotation that it does today!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
