As "Chrstnwr" says, Churchill's shining hour was in WWII when he and Britain alone withstood the menace of a fanatical, inhumane, Hitler led Germany!. Many forget that Britain was quite alone after the rapid fall of France in June of 1940!. For a full year - until Germany foolishly attacked Russia in June 1941 - no other major power opposed Germany and Italy!. We (the USA) only came into the war in December 1941 by which time Britain had been fighting largely alone for 18 months, and we had little to offer initially!. The U!.S!. required many months to gear up for war - produce weapons, train men, transport them to Europe, and finally make a contribution by the end of 1942!. Churchill held Britain together during the long years of struggle virtually without significant help!. Civilians were being bombed in England and Scotland while in the U!.S!. no civilians faced bombings except for the one day at Pearl Harbor!. Churchill was an inspirational leader even though he was already 65 years old when he became prime minister in 1940!. Amazingly, he lost a re-election bid in 1945 just as soon as Germany had been defeated (but before the surrender of Japan)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
