The UN was a second try at an idea that was born after the First World War!.

The treaty that ended that war, the Treaty of Versailles, set up an organization called "The League of Nations"!. Headquartered in Geneva, iIt served generally the same purpose!. The nations of the world would get together to work out issues peacefully and also police each other to keep the peace!.

The United States refused to join the League!. Ironically, the League was the brainchild of American president Woodrow Wilson!. However, the history and traditions of the nation created great resistance towards such an organization!.

The League of Nations basically failed to stop World War II!. Aggression on the part of Japan, Italy, and Germany was just let go!. There would be condemnation, but no real action!. The aggressor countries just left!.

A great admirer of Wilson and his one time assistant secretary of the navy, President Roosevelt felt the idea was good but the execution was bad!. He began to develop the concept for the United Nations!.

On January 1, 1942, 26 countries made an announcement agreeing in principle to create the United Nations!. As the war went on, Roosevelt stopped using the term "Allied Powers" when speaking of the nations opposing Germany, Japan, and Italy!. Instead, he started using the term United Nations!.

From Aug 21 to Oct 7, 1944, the Dumbarton Oaks Conference took place!. Diplomats from the US, UK, USSR, and Republic of China agreed to the general structure of the UN and who would be invited to initially join!. They also made plans for a conference of all the initial members to negotiate the final details!.

One point was that only countries at war with Germany, Italy, OR, Japan would be allowed to attend the following conference!. Because of that, a lot of neutral countries started officially declaring war on Germany so they could get in on it!. Mexico is an example!. Germany was almost finished so it seemed safe!.

From April 25 to June 26, 50 allied nations met in San Francisco to finish the treaty!. The treaty became official on Oct 24, 1945!.

The first meeting of the General Assembly took place in London in Jan 1946!. This time, with America as a member!.

President Roosevelt died in April 12, 1945!. He never lived to see his dream take life!.

Incidentally, the League of Nations had been officially functioning all this time; at least the headquarters staff was!. No one paid much attention to!. After the UN became active, all the files and remaining functions of the League were turned over the the UN!.
