What is today Georgia was part of the Russian Empire and latter Soviet Union for centuries!.

The boundaries of most countries are drawn based on some negotiated settlement between the two sides!. This often happens after a war!. The border between the United States and Mexico was negotiated in 1848 after the Mexican American War, It was latter renegotiated after the US bought some more Mexican territory which is now Southern New Mexico and Arizona!.

The boundaries between the former Soviet Republics were drawn for administrative reasons!.

Countries set internal boundaries to make the country easier to run!. The border between California and Nevada was set by Congress because it was easier to make it work that way!.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, there was so much chaos that there was no opportunity to negotiate borders!. the countries that were born from the collapse just took the borders they had!.

The borders of George worked so long as Georgia was part of the Russian Empire or Soviet Union!. They were all one country!. It never occurred there would be a problem because the border put so many ethnic Russians inside Georgia!. It didn't matter!.

Now, it matters!. South Ossetia is majority ethnic Russian!.and they don't want to be a part of Georgia!.

As to Stalin, well, he could care less about Georgians or Russians!. He was from Georgia, but hate Georgians!. He hated anyone who spoke of their ethnicity!. As far as Stalin was concerned, ethnic pride got in the way!. If he did give those provinces to Georgia, it was without any feelings for ethnicity!. He probably drew a line on the map and said there it is!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

Alexander above is entirely correct but the point most important to us is that it is not up to the US and its quislings to decide anymore than it would have anything to do w!. Russia if Texas broke away from the US (or Alaska, which may yet come to pass, imagine them re-joining Russia!)
My brother lives in Estonia w!. a lot of disgruntled Russians who exist in a state of apartheid w!. in a country that they 'saved' from Hitler then Capitalism as they see it!. If a new Stalin were to have his way there this new apartheid wouldn't exist!.!.!. which is better, for whom!?Www@QuestionHome@Com

South Ossetia is a breakaway region!. It has broken away from Georgia and has become a "de facto" independent republic!.
