The first 3 Enlgish colonies were Roanook Island, Jamestown, then Plymouth Rock!. Men were originally hired to move to these areas and start settlements!. The settlements were close to rivers or any sort of body of water because the British ships would sail in to provide supplies and other things to the new settlers to help the colonies grow!.
