He had written the hymn while aboard one such voyage carrying slaves!. When he docked and unloaded his final cargo he quit the slave trade and subsequently loaded his ship with items not in human form!. There is a recent film about him and famous abolitionist and Prime Minister William Wilberforce, who ended the slave trade in the British Empire!. Newton started his career in the British Navy and eventually became a slave ship captain!. He saw the error of his ways and worked with abolitionists to end slavery!.
