It started out as pictographs (about 5000 years ago)!. But the number of symbols increased to the extent that the written language was impossible to learn!. The number of combinations of the indented wedges was reduced from several thousand to a few hundred and the script evolved into a phonetic form of writing!.

It started off logographic (ie one sign for a word), but then developed a phonetic element and a syllabary - rather like present-day Japanese!.
In fact, by the Assyrian period it was even more like Japanese, because just as some Japanese signs have a Japanese and a Chinese value, some Assyrian signs have a Sumerian, an Akkadian and an Assyrian value, all different!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
