The Industrial Revolution happened mostly in Britain, but its effects were felt around the world!. The cotton gin and the flying shuttle were both invented in Britain but were wildly important to the American textiles industry in the mid 19th century!.

Britain is really seen as the industrial giant during that period because of their massive empire!. The raw materials they needed were produced mostly in their colonies, but were manufactured and turned into finished products in British factories!. You need to remember that America was still a new country at that point and most of the economy was actually agriculturally-based!. New England's economy had formerly been based on fish and lumber (and therefore ship-building)!. Later, textiles factories sprang up and the New England economy turned to commodities manufacturing, including firearms, machinery and shoes!.

Hope this helps!.
