Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Initially, when Israel was an idea, not a country, the Soviets did support it, and some of the early pioneers, the Kibbutzim did have socialist ideals!.
However, when Israel was founded the US supported it, the Soviets withdrew any support they had (Stalin was fairly anti-semitic)!.

So, to answer the question - no they never supported Israel as a country, but they did support its creation!.

The Soviets never backed Israel!. In no small part, of course, this was true because the US did back Israel, as did Britain (now and again) and France (again, intermitently)!. Besides which, the Arab nations surrounding Israel were more lucrative client states!. The SWoviets heavily backed Egypt, Syria and Iraq, as examples!. In fact, one should note that the initial Egyptian victories in the 1973 war came because of massive Soviet Aid to Egypt, and that when the Israeli military finally managed to get an upper hand, the Soviets threatened to intervene directly militarily!. Before Israel became independent the soviets thought that they would fall inside of their sphere of influence because of the Kibbutz system!. Israel, however, saw the evil of Soviet style of Communism so the Soviets supplies the Arab Moslems to try to wipe Israel out!.

That actually worked out good for the Free world though, since Israel supplied us with an unending stream of Soviet Equipment that they captured from the would-be conquerors!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
