Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
I would propose Franklin D!. Roosevelt as the best as he managed to do what was necessary to pull the U!.S!. out of the greatest financial disaster in history and then get us through the most wide-ranging war in history (WW II), although he died shortly before the end of the war!.

There are several in competition for the worst!. Grant, Buchanan, Harding, and Hoover come to mind!. It will be hard to be worse than George W Bush if for no other reason the Bush Doctrine that proposed preemptive war!. To attack another country without provocation goes against everything that democracy stands for!. We're supposed to be the good guys and now to the vast majority of the rest of the world we are a dangerous, out of control bully!. Its a sad situation and it goes back to the elected leader!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

There have been many polls rating the presidents over the years!. Many examples can be seen in the link below!.

The usual contenders for the top spot(s) include George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, and Franklin Roosevelt!.

The bottom spots are occupied by George W!. Bush, James Buchanan, Richard Nixon, Warren G!. Harding, and Andrew Johnson!.

Those ranked highly can generally be said to have been strong leaders who made good decisions in times of war and crisis!. Washington and Jefferson were key figures in forming the nation, Lincoln worked hard to reunite the country during our bloodiest war, and FDR's New Deal led America out of a depression and through WWII!.

Those at the bottom made poor economic or wartime decisions, or were caught involved in scandals!. James Buchanan, for example, ruled that the South's secession from the United States was illegal, but that going to war with them over it was also illegal, effectively tying the government's hands!. Nixon's Watergate scandal is one of the most famous presidential scandals!. Andrew Johnson twice had impeachment proceedings brought against him; as a Southerner leading Reconstruction, many Republicans (liberals of the time) found him to be too lenient and conciliatory with the Southern states!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The best: Franklin Delano Roosevelt!. He led America out of the Great Depression and was the chief architect of US victory over Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan!.

The worst: Richard Milhous Nixon for his many misdeeds that led to his forced resignation!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best!? FDR - a success in both war and peace!.

Worst!? Reagan!. A guy who's so senile he needs cue-cards to remind him to say "Good morning" at cabinet meetings is hardly going to be a success as chief executive!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Best: Ronald Reagan - he was honest and he brought our country more success than any president in recent history!.
Worst: Clinton or Carter - fools who degraded themselves and the office they held (and are still doing it)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Don't you think it's strange that Grant isn't on those 'worst' lists more often!? He was hardly a success as president, was he!? (Corruption was rampant when he was in office, wasn't it!?)Www@QuestionHome@Com

Lincoln, Roosevelt and Kennedy for the best!. Bush, Sr!., Bush, Jr!., and Reagan for the worst!. My opinion only!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
