On christmas day soldiers would patrol to ensure christmas was not being celebrated and they would seize by force if necessary any food being cooked and force shopkeepers to open!. However, following close behind the soldiers were mobs who made the shopkeepers shut their shops when the soldiers left!. There is no record of any strict punishments imposed and it seems most people chose to break the law and celebrate in secret!. Hope this helps!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It's all the Puritans fault ! Acts of 1650 prescribed punishments of fining and whipping for swearing and cursing, imprisonment for fornication, and death for adultery, whilst in 1654 cockfighting and horse racing were outlawed!.

In other words, they would "whip your merry butt" black and blue !!!Www@QuestionHome@Com
