Before the Europeans came, the Aborigines had been living completely off the land for thousands of years!. They had no form of mind altering substances as powerful as alcohol, and quite frankly, their systems couldn't handle it!.
The Europeans on the other hand, had had frequent access to alcohol for centuries, and had a hardened immunity to it!.
The aborigines had an extremely low tolerance, which mean the alcohol had an adverse effect and was highly addictive, and detrimental!.
The problems produced by this sudden appearance of alcohol in their systems are still visible today, most notably diabetes, alcohol addiction and heart disease!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Dear Jen,

As an Englishman (Now an Australian citizen) I first was made aware of the treatment of indigenous people through the introduction of alcohol when we docked at Cape Town in South Africa, then on reading about the American Indians!. The introduction of alcohol to any indigenous people has the same affect all over the world!. Drunkenness, Abuse of wives, husbands and children!. Drugs, rape and murder of their fellow men!.
No job opportunities!.No respect by the white community!. Less education opportunity!. Children forced into prostitution!. Inferior housing!.

The Australian aborigine are a proud people, and they are trying hard to ban alcohol from their local towns, and have set up committees to patrol the streets at night, but at times they fight a loosing battle!.

If you can get hold of any poetry books written by Australian Aborigine, such as Kath Walker (Oodgeroo Nunucal) you will learn much from them!.

The introduction of alcohol into the indigenous community created a lot of problems that are still visible today!. Health problems like diabetes and social problems (that are also common in other Australian communities) such as domestic violence!.

There is a lot more information on the net that you would need to find for yourself but I've added a Wikipedia articule (not always correct but look at the reference section at the bottom of the page) and the Health Department page!.
