hello

sugar !.!.!. a very profitable resource !

The English first discovered Barbados in 1625!. Two years later, they landed there, in Holetown and claimed the island for the British Empire

Sugarcane was introduced to the island by the early settlers and provided Britain with sugar, rum and molasses

Sugar has been an ideal crop for Barbados!. White gold as it was called, produced great wealth, fame and stature for the island and the original plantation owners

By the mid-seventeenth century, Barbados had become both a leading participant in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and one of the most profitable European colonies in the worldWww@QuestionHome@Com

First of all, before the English conquered it, there were the Portuguese, the of course, the Spanish conquerors and last but not least, the English!. They had many reasons to be there and to "colonize" Barbados:

Tobacco, yams, cassava and cotton plantations, thus beginning a long period of English rule which lasted 339 years and gained the island the name of "Little England"!.
During the 1630's, Powell introduced sugar to the island's agriculture, because of difficulties encountered with the crops!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

two reasons

the main one is to deny it to their enemies!. Any territory, regardless of its economic potential, can be used as a military and naval base- either by governments or private persons (eg pirates)!. So in uncertain times it makes sense to capture every piece of land where an enemy can rest, rearm, "refuel" (eg food and drinking water)!. Holding such lands makes commerce safer, which means more profits and more taxes for the King

Second is the economic potential of the islands- fisheries, farms, military bases, repair yards, etc!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
