no one said anything about the connection to American History, !.!.!.most of the founding fathers were protestant I am not sure if any were Catholic, and catholics held no major office or power in the US until the 20th century!. JFK in 1960 was the first elected Catholic president and
there were many concerns that a Catholic politician would put his allegiance to the pope first and not the US!. 48 years later there doesn't seem to be the same concerns about Catholic politicians!. Everyone else listed the major differencesWww@QuestionHome@Com

Well, Catholics made up a small population of England and the Northern Colony's (New World/New England) until around the early 20th century; Protestants had very much difference, take Puritans for example, they believed in "pre-destination" in which god has written everything out for you; then take baptism, where you are baptized at a much older age, where in Catholicism you are baptized at an early age!.

also, the difference led to some conflict between parts of colony's, including tensions and religious toleration acts to appease some of the religious differences!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

"What separates us as believers in Christ is much less than what unites us!." (Pope John XXIII)

Almost all important doctrine is completely agreed upon between Catholic Christians and other Christians!.

Here is the joint declaration of justification by Catholics (1999), Lutherans (1999), and Methodists (2006):

By grace alone, in faith in Christ's saving work and not because of any merit on our part, we are accepted by God and receive the Holy Spirit, who renews our hearts while equipping us and calling us to good works!.

There are many minor doctrine issues and some major cultural traditional differences which, I believe, do not matter that much!.

A Catholic worships and follows Christ in the tradition of Catholicism which, among other things, recognizes that Christ made Peter the leader of His new Church and Pope Benedict XVI is Peter's direct successor!.
