The US made a deal with Stalin!. The Soviet Union controlled Eastern Europe, and the US controlled Western Europe!. The Russians wanted a buffer zone, since they suffered over 28 million deaths in WWII, between those they saw as a threat and their borders!. The US accepted these terms, but tried to entice Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968 to breakaway from the Soviet sphere!. When the uprisings occurred in Hungary and Czechoslovakia, the Soviets crushed them, and the US did not intervene, fearing a wider conflict!.

Russia feared the US would attempt an invasion similar to what happened when Hitler attacked them in 1941!. The US feared the Soviets would spread their ideology throughout Europe!. The fear was unfounded on both sides!. Today most of Western Europe has incorporated socialist systems into their governments without Soviet influence!.

The US encroachment into Poland with missiles and the Ukraine and Georgia is a concern to the now democratic Russia!. They lost more people in WWII than any nation, their memory of that time is ingrained in their culture!. Anything that looks threatening will make them react!. It is not a communist versus capitalist ideal anymore!. It is a nation that just wants to be left alone!.
