Actually i would like to diverge from the previous answerer's logic!. It is very simple to define what Ancient Hebrews did if we assume that the writings of the first four books provide us insight as to the definition!. In the first four books we have numerous occasions of how they worshiped!.

Let us start with what is exactly a Hebrew!? A Hebrew does not necessarily mean a Jew!. Hebrew is a term derived from a grandson of Noah after the flood!. A great many of those descendants did not practice the religion we see written of by Moses!. But they all had similarities in worship style!. As it is a Jew or a believer in Yahweh/Elohim/Jehovah etc, is a Hebrew!. But not all Hebrews are Jews!. This is of course getting too particular as we know the Hebrews practiced the same method of worship!.

Let us start with the altar!. Sacrifices were made upon stone altars the first being erected by Noah!.!.!.Genesis 8:20!. The Tabernacle mentioned by another answerer is merely the thing which houses this altar!. (In fact there were many altars each with varying significance)

The next thing is though Hebrews did not necessarily build ziggurats, they did build many altars on the highest surface to be found!. As I mentioned Noah built the first where the ark rested upon Mount Ararat!. Solomon as mentioned before built the temple which housed the mobile Ark of the Covenant!. So one could say that high places or places closest to God would be the objective and other place a hebrew would worship!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Between Abraham and Moses, I don't think the Old Testament gives a lot of details!. The stories imply that each family grouping had their own altar where the necessary sacrifices were made!.

After Moses led the Hebrews from Egypt into the wilderness, God gave Moses instructions for building a tabernacle - a portable tent that would contain the Ark of the Covenant and would be a central focal point for worship!.

Solomon, of course, replaced the tabernacle with a Temple in Jerusalem, and that was the center of sacrifices and celebration of the major festivals!.

By the time of Jesus, each community had its own synagogue where the scriptures were taught, in addition to still having the festivals and sacrifices that took place in Jerusalem!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
