Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
If you're looking for a documentary series then the best by far is "The World At War" that was produced in the 1970's by Thames Television!. It looks at all points of the conflict, civilian and military, from the European to Pacific theatres, land, sea and air battles, the rise of Nazism and imperial Japan, the aftermath and the holocaust!. It uses interviews with those involved, both in the Allied and Nazi high commands as well as the regular soldiers with accompanied archive film footage!. Each episode is narrated by Laurence Olivier!.

The dvd boxed set contains 11 discs with all 26 episodes, each an hour in length plus 8 special presentations!. I can highly recommend it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The World at War
This is the most informative and best documentary I've seen on WW2 in 30 years of studying history!. It's 22 hours long and is what got me interested in WW2 history when it came out in the 70's!. The series interviewed leading members of both the Allied and Axis campaigns and includes many eye-witness accounts!.
See source for a list and short description of the 26 episodes!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I concur with The World at War!. One of its great advantages is that, being made circa 1970, it includes eye-witness testimony from many of the key figures of the time - including (off the top of my head) Doenitz and Bomber Harris!. I'm pretty sure Albert Speer was on it, too!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
