People did swear, but swearing was considered much more shocking then that it is now, and they would not be likely to swear so much in public as people do now!. Men were not supposed to swear in front of women for instance!. You would not hear people swearing in films or on the radio!.

Contrary to what a comment above says, people in the 1940s did not behave exactly the way we do now!. manners were more formal and people were more careful about what they said in public!. Children were expected to be respectful towards adults, swearing would never be tolerated in schools for instance!.

In the film 'Hope and Glory' which shows WW2 from a child's point of view (based on the director John Boorman's own childhood), there is a scene where the boy has to swear in order to be able to join a gang!. However, when he uses the 'f' word, the other members of the gang are quite shocked!. "That word is special" they tell him solemnly!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

As part of the research for the film Titanic James Cameron consulted experts who explained that in the 85 years between the events and the film, slang and style of speech is about 80% the same!. From the 1940's to today, the similarities in speech would be slightly more similar!. Of course some terms, like those that entered the vernacular due to technology or events that didn't exist at the time, would be different, but that's a small percentage of the vocabulary people use!. People are people, no matter what decade!. Curses have always been common among the sorts of people who use them today!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
