No modern country was self-sufficient, especially in the resources needed for war!. Britain could not feed itself from its own farms!. Germany had a continuously harder time doing it as the war went on and was finally facing starvation!. So, imports carried by merchant ships were vitally important!. The British blockade choked off German imports while allowing the British to draw resources from the rest of the world!. also, the US intervention finally tipped the balance and led to German defeat!. All US troops and much of their food and supplies came by ship!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

easy!. It is the same reason why after German sunk the Lusitania, we still did not get involved in the war!. American industry was getting rich!. We sere supplying foodstuffs, fuel, weapons, armament, and general equipment top bot sides!. We did not care the Big Americans corporations who run the company like now!. were making money hand over fist selling to both sides!. This is a true story!. But when the English began German port blockades!. A refitted German u-boat made it all the way to America for supplies!. They were actually met with cheers and a huge crowd for getting to America and the crew was even given a state dinner by the president!. We played both sides and merchant ships played a role in supplying them!. We sailed into British ports to supply the British!. But because of the blockade we could not safely get to Germany so we sent out merchant ships to South Africa!. But with the u-boats surrounding Britain and the British fleet surrounding Germany!. Merchant ship were the way to get supplies to these countries!. But we wanted money so we were the ones supplying both sides!. The convoys helped the British and diverting merchant ships to South Africa helped Germany!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

ice has it right and so well put but it was the start of the convoy system because the royal navy couldn't protect all the ships at sea but they stood a better chance in organised convoysWww@QuestionHome@Com
