Question: What was life like during the 1800's!?
Short, sweet, and simple!. But I kind of want a long answer!. Preferably around 1850+

By the way, yes I've done my fair share of research, but I mostly only get stuff about war and dates of the wars!. I want those little details about - just an example - a family's life on a farmhouse!. Having to ride a carriage in to town for grocercy's when farming wasn't in season or something!. You know!?

Anything helps! Thanks!. :]Www@QuestionHome@Com

I suggest you try reading "Everyday Life in the 1800s" by Marc McCutcheon and "Everyday Life During the Civil War" by Michael J!. Varhola!. Here's a list of the chapters from each so you have an idea what to expect from them:

"Everyday Life in the 1800s"

1!. Slang and Everday Speech - deals with the meanings of terms from the period

2!. Getting Around - chapter on transportation

3!. Around the House - chapter on things found in the house, includes info on boarding houses and tenements

4!. Clothing and Fashion - deals with what folks wore and how they did their hair

5!. Occupations - jobs in the 1800s

6!. Money and Currencies - explains the types of currency from the period

7!. Health, Medicine and Hygiene - deals with common illnesses of the period and how they were treated

8!. Food, Drink and Tobacco - deals with what folks ate and drank (and vices)

9!. Amusements - what folks did for fun

10!. Courtship and Marriage - deals with dating and getting married

11!. Slavery and Black Plantation Culture - deals with the lives of slaves

12!. The Civil War - deals with the war

13!. Out on the Range - a chapter on life in the Wild West

14!. Crime - deals with the various crimes, criminals, and common punishments of the era

"Everyday Life During the Civil War"

1!. North and South: One Nation, Two People - chapter on the differences between the cultures of the North and the South

2!. Wages, Currency, Clothing and Dry Goods - deals with what folks earned for certain occupations, the types of money, what was worn, what could be purchased, and things that were used as substitutes during shortages

3!. Life in City, Town and Country - differences in the way folks lived between urban and rural areas, also deals with architecture and housing costs

4!. Food and Diet - chapter on what folks ate, includes a few recipes from the period

5!. Fun and Games: How People Entertained Themselves - the various types of entertainments of the era, includes vices such as tobacco

6!. The Civil War Viewed from the Home Front - how the war affected the folks not fighting the war

7!. Brothers at War: Billy Yank, Johnny Reb - the soldiers and sailors and how they lived

8!. Slang and Idiom - the meanings of things said during the period

9!. Technology - the technology of the period, covering not just military tech but also medical, rail, farming, and communications

10!. Arms, Equipment, and Uniforms - what the soldiers wore and the weapons they carried

"Everyday Life During the Civil War" is a little misleading as it's not merely concerned with the period between the start of the war and it's end!. I've found that chapter 5 is a little bit of all over the 1800s were entertainment is concerned!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
