He killed millions industrializing Russia, but without those industries, they couldn't have fought off the Nazis!. He so completely dominated and controlled the lives of the people that when he died, people actually committed suicide thinking the world was coming to an end!. He had made himself into a god in their minds!. Yest afterwords, the communist party of the Soviet Union denounced him as a tyrant!. Today, many Russians, specially the young, feel nostalgic for him because it was a time when they were a powerful nation which controlled half the world!. The terror of living under his rule is glossed over because its not real to those who didn't live through it!. It's like someone can explain how tough things were in the Great Depression, but its hard for us to comprehend!. You have to remember also that Russians are only one ethnicity, the largest, in the Soviet Union!. Ukrainians, the second largest, saw him as a monster who starved their people by the millions!. They even welcomed the invading Nazi German armies as heroes until they realized that Hitler was an even bigger monster!. Latvians, Lithuanians, and Estonians hate him too!. George Orwell was one of the first to question the cult of Stalin, and his classic 'Animal Farm' is basically about the Russian revolution, with Trotsky and Stalin as the pigs!. The Lawrence Rees book 'War of the Century' is also excellent for outlining the sort of man Stalin was!. Robert Conquest has written many books on this but he is today seen as too biased against Stalin!. In life, most people are followers!. Most follow along because they have to and its easy, but there is a large minority that will always serve the powerful- Rees makes the point that many of the best Nazis were Communists who simply swapped on religion for another!. So a powerful psychopath will always attract a strong following, once he acquires power!.
