Not a train, but one or more private railway carriages which could be hitched on to a scheduled train or run as a 'special' behind a chartered locomotive, as appropriate!.

Not only presidents, but all sorts of rich and powerful men had this arrangement: it was an early version of the executive jet!. As the technology developed, it became possible to use the electric telegraph, then radio from a train on the move, keeping them in touch with events as they travelled!.

It was of course highly expensive, and caused grumbles from the paying public when chartered specials interfered with normal services!. It dropped out of favour when motor and later air transport became common!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Andrew Jackson was the first president to travel by train, but it wasn't exactly 'the president's' train!. the famous lincoln train likewise, was not his train, nor did he travel on it a great deal when alive, it was made famous because it carried his remains across the country on its way to his final resting place!. Harrison did have a presidential train, as did FDR!. FDR's train was armored and used the B&O line to carry him from washington to his summer home in New York!.
