Question: Causes of the Spanish-American War!?
I have to write an essay on this, and one of the things I have to consider as a possible cause of the war is "strategic interest!." Can anybody tell me what they mean by that!?

Basically it means that the Spanish had a territorry 90 miles off of Florida so by the Monroe Doctrine it was in Americas intrest to remove the Eurpean presence from the western hemisphere!. Due to the Teller admenment though they could not annex Cuba so they made it a protectorite!.

The Phillipeans were a vital shipping port for any nation that wanted to be a Pacific power!. The U!.S!. would use them to resupply their expeditions into Japan and China in the 20th century!. In both cases it was in the US's "strategic Intrest" to control these vital territories!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The US wanted access to ports on the Pacific Ocean!. Southern Democrats were the party most anxious for war, to fulfill the US's Manifest Destiny (domination of all North America)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The Americans had a strategic interest to kill Mexicans, and for them, that would be vice versa!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The same reason for any war!. Americans bought the land and many Mexicans fought on the American side!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
