Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Field Marshal Sir Claude John Eyre Auchinleck was actually C in C Middle East Command!.

Montgomery was preceded in command of the British Eighth Army by Lieutenant-Generals Sir Alan Cunningham and Neil Ritchie!. When Ritchie could not halt Rommel, Auchinleck himself took direct command of the Army!. Churchill grew impatient and replaced Auchinleck as C in C Middle East in August 1942 with General Harold Alexander and as Eighth Army commander by Lieutenant-General William Gott!. Gott was killed in an air crash on his way to take up his command and so Lieutenant-General Bernard Montgomery was appointed in his place!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
