The foundation for the first world war was set decades before when Otto von Bismarck negotiated a number of treaties where everyone was covering everyone else's back!.
The Black Hand terrorist organization ignited the war by assassinating the Arch Duke (and his wife) of Austria!.
Austria asked if Germany would still honor that agreement should they demand an apology or go to war!.
Germany said "Yes" they would honor that log standing agreement, but had no idea that it would take the Austrians another 30 days to actually issue the demand/ultimatum!.
In marching into France, the Germans were attempting to execute the Schleffen Plan which was to divide the German army, one turning south just short of Paris, the other continuing its march westward north of Paris and THEN swinging south to rejoin the first element!. The second element turned south too soon and fell short of taking Paris!. They then dug in and it turned into a quagmire of mud and blood!.
Military leaders of all sides clung steadfast to out dated tactics that allowed for the slaughter of millions!. In the opening hour of the first Battle of the Somme some 200,000 men died, marching in neat columns towards well entrenched German machine gunners!. The battle continued on for months!.
