Question: Is ancient greek hard!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
i took a year of it and really enjoyed it and did well at it!. it all depends on the person and their interest in the language!. i myself have a strong interest in ancient languages such as the ancient near eastern languages!. i disagree with the poster who compared ancient greek to modern greek!. while there are noticeable similarities, the structure of ancient greek and the vocabulary is very different!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

If you mean is it difficult to learn, that depends!. If you are good at languages already (French, Spanish, German, Latin and so on) then learning classical Greek is not much different!.

The major problem for beginners is that it uses a completely different alphabet; once this is mastered, the process is just about learning the vocabulary, grammar and sentence construction!.

If you have no understanding of English grammar then you are facing an extremely difficult challenge!. If you are able to identify the subject, object and verb in a sentence then you should have little difficulty!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well, how good are you at learning languages!? If you have a facility for languages, you won't find it too hard!. And if you already speak modern Greek you are way ahead of the field!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Yes!.
You have to get your head around the script for a start!.
Then there are all sorts of linguistic concepts foreign to an English-speaker!.
But it's not as hard as Chinese!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I wouldn't say so!. There were thousands who could speak it in ancient Greece, even 3-4 years old :)
Seriously - the guy before me already answered!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
