Pent up desire for what the capitalists had by the Russian people is what did it in!. The government had an expansive program of proping up Cuba, and other countries, plus and expensive space race and arms race--people were not getting homes, food, and medical care!. Then Afghanistan and that was the last straw!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

it was rotten from the inside!. It lossed the cold war on economic grounds!. The sovjet-union was in full reform, like China is now!.!.only less successfull!. The hardliners of the old school communists tried a coup!.!.!.A countercoup was done (with tanks near parliament and such, i think)!.

So it's down to economics and internal strive!. The USA helped in this by pushing the arms race to new heights, wich further crippled the soviet economy!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

In the arms race the Soviets lost by spending more money than their economy could afford!.
The final disaster was the war in Afghanistan from 1979 to 1989!.
The same thing is now happening to the USA!.
