These are really two different questions!. To start, the very concept of a "country" has changed radically over the years!. Both Athens and Macedonia were territorial political jurisdictions in what we now call Greece, but Athens was a (smaller) city-state in whereas Macedonia was a (larger) unit in the North!. Originally separate, they both became parts of the (much larger) empire created by Alexander the Great (born in 323 BC), who was born in Macedonia as the son of its king (Philip)!.

The "achievements of ancient Greece" are astonishing by any standard, and the great bulk of them arose from Athens during its independent existence!. Much of our modern Western civilization's art, science, mathematics, politics and philosophy is a quite direct reflection of Athen's extraordinary richnness and creativity, perhaps the most productive in human history!. No, ancient Greece was not a unified country!. It consisted of many smaller city-states, much like Italy in the Renaissance!. Even after Macedonia conquered the rest of the area the individual cities still acted largely on their own and continued to resist Macedon's hegemony!. It wasn't until Rome squashed Greece there was any real form of unification!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
