Well, we can start by pointing out Hiroshima and Nagasaki were events during WWII!. Vietnam was 2 wars later

Hiroshima and Nagasaki were chosen because they were major industrial cities and destroying them would stop the Japanese from retooling their war machine quickly or easily!.

There was a warning that Hiroshima would come and the Japanese didn't respond!. After the bomb was dropped in Hiroshima, they were warned a second bomb was ready to be deployed!. They still didn't back down!. They were shocked that we dropped the second bomb!. Nothing had prepared them for a force that destructive!.

Japan had been in isolation until the middle of the 1800s when Admiral Perry sailed into Edo Harbor (now called Tokyo Bay)!. The Japanese weren't ready for western ways because until that point they had banned all westerners except some Dutch Jesuit priests!.

When Europe found out that the Americans had succeeded in establishing an open relationship with Japan, they all rushed to join in the plunder!. The chief root of WWII is actually tied to a clause written into all of the treaties that the western countries signed with Japan, called a "Most Favored Nation" clause!. It meant that the Japanese couldn't really negotiate a favorable treaty with one country over another because whatever they gave any other country, they also had to give to their "most favored nation" partners!. They felt used and couldn't get out of these treaties!.

In the early 1900s Japan went through a bloodless revolution called the "Meiji Revolution" and that was followed by the "Meiji Restoration"!. That overthrew the feudal Shogun society and introduced a western-style monarchy!.

Like the West, Japan went from feudal society to an attempt at "empire building"!. It's something that many historians believe is all part of a cycle for all countries!. When the US built its empire, they settled the western lands on their own continent!. When England built its empire, it was spread all over the globe!. Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands and France had colonized most of the rest of Asia by the time the Japanese wanted to grow and build their own empire!. The only way they could expand was to conquer other lands and take them away from either their current colonizers (like taking Singapore from the British) or overtaking free countries (like the Philippines) and establishing themselves as the colonial power!.

Japan was a very focused and strong society!. They were not going to give up easily, even when the war was approaching their own shores!. Truman's belief was that they would have to be shocked into submission!. That's why he approved the dropping of both atomic bombs!. Rightly or wrongly, his move was decisive!. He did shock them into submission!. To this day, they are not forgetting what happened!. They just changed their focus from ruling the world politically to ruling it economically!. To that end, they are immensely successful!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
